Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Tornado Damage? (It Depends on Your State)

Tornado damage is usually standard - with exceptions

In most states, wind damage from a tornado is a standard, included peril on a normal homeowners policy. A handful of states - Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas - are different: insurers there can write a separate wind/hail deductible or exclusion into a standard policy, most often tied to coastal or hail-prone exposure.

What to actually check

If your county is in one of those seven states, the practical step is confirming directly with your insurer or agent whether wind/hail carries its own deductible or exclusion on your specific policy - it is not automatic, and it is not universal even within those states. Outside them, tornado wind damage is close to universally included as standard.

This is not the same question as shelter cost

Insurance coverage and shelter cost answer different questions - one is about paying to rebuild after the fact, the other is about surviving the event itself. See why violent history matters for the second question.
